Gemelli's Italian Market

I found what I was looking for (Torrone Nougat) to celebrate the holiday but prices are outrageous. Likewise, the sandwich I ordered was fresh and excellent, but for $14 it should have been. I'm from NJ and can't find any good quality Italian foods/sandwiches/ rolls/ pizza. Yes, this store has items but pricing is twice what same items are in NJ.

Recommend for a variety of Italian goods. Stopped in to get some fresh pasta and stayed for a sandwich. Staff is helpful and ready to answer questions. If things are not on shelves, ask, there might be more in the back. The counter ordering is easy, there are some signs to guide. There are lots of different products offered. Take a look around and check it out. Had a porchetta sandwich on some fresh baked bread. Sandwich was good and made to order.

Yesterday, I went to Gemelli's Italian got the first time. It was a Friday and in the middle of lunch hour, but I wanted to see how the place operated. Gemelli's is a market specialized in Italian and Italian American products. The first thing I saw as I entered was that it was very busy, which is always a good sign. To my right there were cold cases with deserts, Italian imported cheeses (and some American brands like Auriccio), as well as imported and American-made cold cuts like prosciutto di Parma, capiccola, salamis, etc. On the wall hung a huge menu with hot and cold Italian style sandwiches and salads. To my left, a mini mart, with a wall-to-wall selection of both imported and American made Italian products like olives, olive oil, canned tomatoes, dry pastas, candies, etc. There were wine displays with bottles of Italian reds, whites and prosseccos. Behind me, cold cases with fresh made pastas and frozen Italian soups and main dishes. I was impressed with the variety of products, but found the prices a little steep, since (with the exception of the wines, which all were Italian), many of the products were not super high end national brands or Italian imports. It was lunch time, so I wanted to try one of their sandwiches (one of my fondest memories of my years living in New York City was to go to the Italian markets on Carmine Street and surroundings and get a parmigiana sandwich on crusty bread), so I went for the parmigiana di melanzane (eggplant parmigiana). Unfortunately, the sandwich did not live up to my expectations: the eggplant inside was mushy, somewhat bitter and did not seemed to be the traditional eggplant "in pastella" (lightly breaded and fried) but more like roasted and chopped; the marinara sauce was almost non-existent, and there was some cheese, which was not mozzarella, but provolone (which was fine). The bread was fresh and crusty, and it was the most delicious part of the sandwich. I also chose a can Sicilian lemon beverage that tasted too much like citric acid. The service was courteous and efficient; it reminded me of the service in food stores in Rome, where you order first, and then pay a centralized cashier. Overall, I am giving Gemelli Market it's stars for the variety of their products, and for the efficient and courteous service I was given, but I will have to visit another time, and try some of the other sandwiches they offer.
